The Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute were established in 1955 by Dr. Shivram and Dr. Mekhri in the fort police station. In the year 1957 it was handed over to the Government of Mysore and it was allied to Mysore University and then moved to the Bangalore University. It is situated on K.R. Road, near City Market.

After the formation of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Science, Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute was affiliated to the new university in 1997. BMC celebrated its golden jubilee in the year 2005–2006 with major renewal and the inauguration of a state-of-the-art digital library and Basavarajendra Auditorium.

In the year 2006, the college was granted autonomous status by the Government of Karnataka. This college is presently undergoing major renovation all along the lines of AIIMS.

Infrastructure

Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute spread over a total area of 200 acres, the campus includes the academic block, hospitals, library, hostels, student lounge, food court, gymnasium, a basketball court, volleyball court, etc. In Bangalore Medical College has Centenary building houses new wards, the Nuclear medicine department with a gamma camera and modern operation theatres are available.

The Infosys Foundation has constructed a good equipped 24 hours central laboratory at Victoria Hospital campus which includes the Pathology, Microbiology, and Biochemistry labs. This Laboratory provides the latest diagnostic tests at subsidized rates for the poor and needy patients.

Libary

Bangalore Medical College has a Central library stocked with 39880 books and subscribes to about 190 journals (Foreign & Indian) each year. This Library has a long history with the closed-access of earlier times to the present–day. It has a hybrid, digital and Electronic Library that uses the latest technology for provision of information. At the Right time, the library is servicing the medical user community with the right medical information. Bangalore Medical College library has developed the collection of resources that are required for the student community of the institution.

The library is spread over 4,000 sq mt. in two floors with provision for textbooks segment, a reference section, stock area, back volume part, periodical section, dissertation section, an audio/video segment, reprographic segment, computer workstation with high-speed internet facility and access to e-resources also. It has separate Librarian office and technical section and own book reading area.

Hostel

Bangalore Government Medical College and Research Institute provide the students who needed the Hostel Accommodation Facilities. Hostel Deposit Fees at the time of admission is nearly Rs.7025 and the Room Rent is Rs 248 The boy’s hostels are named as Bheema Hostel which one is located near Rayan Circle, Tunga Bhadra Hostel within the campus and another one near Palace Road. The ladies' hostel is named as Kaveri hostel is located within the campus next to the Tunga Bhadra hostel.

The Postgraduate hostel is located in Chamrajpet. UG Boys Hostel with 98 Rooms, Shivajinagar Men’s Hostel with 120 Rooms, PG Men’s Hostel Rayan Circle with 55 Rooms, Ladies Hostel with 81 Rooms, PG Ladies Hostel Tower Block Victoria Hospital with 24 Rooms are totally available. The Hostel is attached with the Mess Facility. It provides Clean and Nutritious Food to the Students. More than 100 students can dine at the same time as the Mess with Dining Hall. The hostel block has separate Sports & Entertainment Hall, with a well-equipped gymnasium for both boys and girls.

Bangalore Medical College nearest bus stop is Kempegowda bus station within 3.5 km we can reach it in 20 to 25 min, through Cottenpet main road. Another bus stop is Mysore Road satellite Bus station with 5.6 km, and reaching timing of 25 to 30 min without bad traffic through Mysore road to Dodpete.

Bangalore City Railway station is the Nearest railway station from this college with reaching timing of 20 to 25 min trough kalasipalyam main road with 5.6 km. Kempegowda International Airport is near to this college within 37.5 km with reaching timing of 1 hour.
