Bachelor of Unani Medicine & Surgery – B.U.M.S.

BUMS - Unani-tibb or Unani Medicine also spelled Yunani Medicine (Arabic, Hindustani, Pashto and Persian) is a form of traditional medicine practiced in middle-east & south-Asian countries. It refers to a tradition of Graeco-Arabic medicine, which is based on the teachings of Greek physician Hippocrates and Roman physician Galen, and developed into an elaborate medical system in middle age era by Arabian and Persian physicians, such as Rhazes (al-Razi), Avicenna (Ibn Sena), Al-Zahrawi, and Ibn Nafis. Unani medicine first arrived in India around 12th or 13th century with establishment of Delhi Sultanate (1206–1527) and Islamic rule over North India and subsequently flourished under Mughal Empire. An outstanding physician and scholar of Unani Medicine, Hakim Ajmal Khan (1868 – 1927) championed the cause of the Unani system in India. The Unani System of Medicine is included in the Central Council of Indian Medicine as per IMCC, Act 1970. The Unani medicine system is one of the ancient medication system adopted by the South-Asia and Middle-East countries of the world. This system has originated from the Greek by the great physician “Hippocrates”. It is also known as the “Hikmat” or UnaniTibb Medicine. It has the 6000 years back history. This system refers to the Roman medication system developed by the Roman physician “Galen”. In the middle age era and by the development of this system, the Arabic and Persian physician have been adopted and flagged this system.

BUMS - (Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery): What is it about?

B.U.M.S. is an undergraduate degree programme in the field of Unani medicine and surgery. This degree covers the medical knowledge of the Unani system. To pursue and owe this degree is quite enough to become a doctor (Hakim) in the Unani medical field. Unani is the system of alternative medicines. The patients are taken care by enhancing the natural healing power of the human body. The concept of Unani is that the body rejuvenates itself because of its self healing power. We just need to help it by enhancing the natural healing power. “Unani is the ancient medical system which is involved in the treatment of patients to help in enhancing the body’s natural healing system by using Unani medicines”. Unani is the fourth most popular medication system in India after the allopathic, ayurvedic and homeopathic system. According to this system there are four elements in human body as the Blood, Phlegm, yellow bile and the black bile. This is similar to the Ayurveda in term of the four elements and as popular as the Ayurveda. According to this system the treatment of any disea system is depends on the proper diagnosis. The clinical features as the sign, symptoms, laboratory features and mijaz are important to diagnose any disease. BUMS Eligibility

The candidate must be a Indian Nationals, Non Resident Indians (NRIs), Overseas Citizen of India (OCI), & Persons with Indian Origin (PIO)

The Candidate has completed age of 17 years at the time of admission or will complete that age on or before 31 December of the year of his/her admission to the first year Undergraduate Medical Courses .

The upper age limit for NEET (UG) is 25 years as on the date of examination with relaxation of 5 years for the candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC-NCL category and PwD Candidates.

The  candidate  must be medically fit and  must submit a certificate of medical fitness at the time of Admission.

The candidate must have passed the qualifying examination  i.e. Higher  Secondary Certificate  (HSC/12th Standard) or equivalent examination, with English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology  (Botany & Zoology)

A candidate belonging to OPEN Category  and EWS Category must have obtained  not less than 50%  (i.e. 150 out of 300) marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology, taken together at the HSC (or equivalent) Examination.  

A candidate belonging  to constitutional  reservation  except EWS Category and  constitutional  reservation with Person  With Disability claim must have obtained  not less than 40% (i.e.  120 out of 300) marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology  taken together at the HSC (or equivalent)  Examination. Person with disability  candidate in General category must  secure not less than  45% marks (i.e. 135  out of 300) in Physics, Chemistry & Biology (PCB)  taken together at the HSC  (or  equivalent) Examination or decided by  respective Central Council.

Candidate should have  passed SSC (or equivalent)  examination from the  recognized board with Urdu or Arabic or Persian  Language  as  one  of  the  subject.


NEET Eligibility for Admission to BUMS.


A candidate belonging to OPEN Category  & EWS Category must secure not less  than 50 percentile marks in Physics,  Chemistry  & Biology  (PCB) taken  together in the NEET UG Exam

A candidate belonging to constitutional reservation except EWS Category and  constitutional reservation with Person  with disability claim must secure not  lessthan 40 percentile marks in Physics,  Chemistry & Biology (PCB) taken together  in the NEET UG Exam

Person with disability candidate in  General  category must secure not less  than 45 percentile marks in Physics,  Chemistry & Biology (PCB)  taken together  in  the NEET  UG exam or decided  by  respectivecentral  council  time to  
time.
