MD Dermatology, Venereology & Leprology: What is it about?

Dermatology, Venereology & Leprology is a field which is related to the skin so it is also called dermatology. Dermatology, Venereology & Leprologyis a branch of medicine which is dealing with the disorders of the skin. Skin is not the only skill for these graduates they can also deal with nails and hair problems. It involves the removal of scars from skin, extra growth in the skin, unusual behavior by skin, etc. Some of the disorders are psoriasis, eczema, and allergies of scalp, skin allergies and many more. The aim of teaching the undergraduate student in Dermatology, S.T.D. and Leprology is to impart such knowledge and skills that may enable him to diagnose and treat common ailments and to refer to rare diseases or complications/unusual manifestations of common diseases, to the specialist. In recent days, many dermatologists also perform elective procedures like botox injections, laser hair removal, and hair transplant, collagen injections, etc. A post graduate specialist having undergone the required training should be able to recognize the health needs of the community, should be competent to handle effectively the medical problems and aware of recent advances pertaining to the discipline. The PG student should acquire basic skills in teaching medical/para-medical students. The student should be able to counsel patients and relatives in infectious diseases like HIV/AIDS, STDs, cutaneous tuberculosis, leprosy and any event of serious illness or death.

Eligibility

Entry into post MBBS MD/MS/Diploma, DNB (Diplomat of National Board) & CPS (College of Physicians and Surgeons) program is through a national level centralized entrance test called NEET PG entrance Exam by NBE , Candidates need to satisfy the eligibility criteria mentioned below:

  • Candidates should have obtained an MBBS Degree from an institution recognized by the Medical Council of India (MCI).
  • Candidate should have completed a 1- year compulsory rotating internship after passing the final professional examination which is MBBS before 31st March of the academic year.
  • Candidates in possession of an MBBS degree or Provisional MBBS Passing Certificate recognized by the Indian Medical Council of India or State Medical Council and having completed 1 year of internship or/ are likely to complete the internship on or before 31st March of the relevant year.

A candidate must clear NEET-PG exam in order to be

  • Eligible for admission to postgraduate Medical Courses for a particular academic year in case of General, General-EWS, it shall be necessary for a candidate to obtain minimum of marks at 50th percentile in NEET-PG (National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test) to Postgraduate Medical Courses held for the said academic year.
  • However, in respect of candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, the minimum marks shall be at 40th percentile. In respect of candidates with Benchmark Disabilities specified under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, the minimum marks shall be at 45th percentile for Unreserved Category & GEN-EWS Category candidates and 40th percentile for SC/ST/OBC-NCL candidates.
  • The percentile shall be determined on the basis of highest marks secured in the All India common merit list in National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test for admission to Postgraduate Medical Courses
