About DNB Paediatrics Surgery.

DNB Paediatrics Surgery is that branch of medicine that deals with the diseases, trauma and malformations of childhood years (fetal period to teenage years). Consultant surgeons working in this area of clinical practice will have undergone a specific training programme to furnish the knowledge, skills and professional attitudes necessary for dealing with children and their families It is anticipated that trainees will progress through the stages from novice, to competent practitioner, and ultimately to independent practitioner.

Training programmes provide opportunities for exposure to the wide range of surgical problems in children, commensurate with acquisition of the competences as detailed within the curriculum document. In addition trainees may be exposed to more focused practice in various paediatric specialties as detailed above.

PROGRAMME GOAL

At the end of the training the candidate should have acquired knowledge, abilities and attitudes to be able to function as a pediatric surgeon in a teaching/non teaching hospital with confidence and competence to diagnose and manage surgical conditions of infancy and childhood. He would also have acquired skills to identify, plan and carry out surgical treatment and the ability to transfer knowledge and skills of his speciality and thus fulfill the function of a teacher. The curriculum is competence-based. It focuses on the traineeā€Ÿs ability to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and professional behaviours that they have acquired in their training (specified in the syllabus) through observable behaviours.

Eligibility

Entry examination of MD/MS/Diploma, DNB (Diplomat of National Board) & CPS (College of Physicians and Surgeons) program is through a national level centralized entrance test (Combined NEET PG entrance by NBE) Typically, to pursue a MD/MS/Diploma, DNB (Diplomat of National Board) & CPS (College of Physicians and Surgeons) degree, candidates need to satisfy the eligibility criteria mentioned below:

  • Candidates should have obtained an MBBS Degree from an institution recognized by the Medical Council of India (MCI).
  • Candidate should have completed a 1- year compulsory rotating internship after passing the final professional examination which is MBBS before 31st March of the academic year.
  • Candidates in possession of an MBBS degree or Provisional MBBS Passing Certificate recognized by the Indian Medical Council of India or State Medical Council and having completed 1 year of internship or/ are likely to complete the internship on or before 31st March of the relevant year.

A candidate must clear the NEET-PG exam in order to be

  • Eligible for admission to postgraduate Medical Courses for a particular academic year in case of General, General-EWS, it shall be necessary for a candidate to obtain a minimum of marks at 50th percentile in NEET-PG (National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test) to Postgraduate Medical Courses held for the said academic year.
  • However, in respect of candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, the minimum marks shall be at 40th percentile. In respect of candidates with Benchmark Disabilities specified under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, the minimum marks shall be at 45th percentile for Unreserved Category & GEN-EWS Category candidates and 40th percentile for SC/ST/OBC-NCL candidates.
  • The percentile shall be determined on the basis of highest marks secured in the All India common merit list in National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test for admission to Postgraduate Medical Courses

PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES.

At the end of the course the student should have acquired:

  • A broad understanding of the principles of basic sciences related to Paediatric Surgery.
  • Ability and skills to perform and interpret investigative procedures relating to his speciality.
  • Skills in the clinical diagnosis and management, with capabilities to take independent decisions in emergency situations, perform major paediatric surgical operation and guide postoperative treatment and manage complications.
  • Competence in intensive care of newborn infants before and after surgery with practical knowledge of working with resuscitative and monitoring equipments.
  • Ability of self learning critically appraise published literature, interpret data and to broaden his knowledge by keeping abreast with modern developments in Paediatric Surgery.
  • Ability to identify, outline and initiate research projects relating to his speciality and draw relevant/ pertinent scientific conclusions.
  • Ability to search online, use information technology to his advantage, and critically evaluate medical literature and draw own conclusion.
  • Ability to impart instructions and transfer knowledge and skills to postgraduates and undergraduate and nursing students in the basic management of surgical diseases of infancy and childhood.
  • Necessary knowledge of basic pediatric health care and principles of management of common ailments of childhood.
  • Keep abreast of Government’s latest policies and procedures as related to health care.
