M.D.S Masters of Dental Science


MDS is a postgraduate course in different disciplines of dentistry. A candidate has to be a Bachelor of Dental Science from a recognized university in order to be eligible for this course. M.D.S is a three-year program that has almost nine specialty disciplines. The course follows an annual system over semester system. The mode of admission is solely through Entrance Examination which is either conducted by a state, university, national level.

About the Course

Dental Science or Dental Surgery is a branch of the medical sciences which deals with dental and oral health. This course imparts the knowledge and the skills to solve these dental and oral health problems which are faced by most of the human population.

Specializations

In different colleges, students would find Master of Dental Health (Public Health) or some other variant. These are specializations and not an entirely different course. M.D.S provides the following specializations:

  • Prosthodontics and Crown & Bridge
  • Periodontology
  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics
  • Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics
  • Oral Pathology and Microbiology
  • Public Health Dentistry
  • Paedodontics and Preventive Dentistry
  • Oral Medicine and Radiology

Eligibility of the Master of Dental Surgery [MDS]

Typically, to pursue an MD degree, candidates need to satisfy the eligibility criteria mentioned below:

  • Candidates should have obtained an BDS Degree from an institution recognized by the Dental Council of India (DCI).
  • Candidate should have completed a 1- year compulsory rotating internship after passing the final professional examination which is BDS before 31stMarch of the academic year.

Candidates in possession of an BDS degree or Provisional BDS Pass Certificate recognized by the Dental Council of India or State Dental Council and having completed 1 year of internship or/ are likely to complete the internship on or before 31st March of the relevant year. A candidate must clear NEET-MDS exam in order to be

  • Eligible for admission to postgraduate Medical Courses for a particular academic year in case of General, General-EWS, it shall be necessary for a candidate to obtain minimum of marks at 50th percentile in NEET-MDS (National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test) to Postgraduate Medical Courses held for the said academic year.
  • However, in respect of candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, the minimum marks shall be at 40th percentile. In respect of candidates with Benchmark Disabilities specified under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, the minimum marks shall be at 45th percentile for Unreserved Category & GEN-EWS Category candidates and 40th percentile for SC/ST/OBC-NCL candidates.
  • The percentile shall be determined on the basis of highest marks secured in the All India common merit list in National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test for admission to Postgraduate Medical Courses
